    Six Ways To Find A Home

    Are you ready to find a home? You can increase the odds of finding the right home by searching in more than one way. Try any or all of these six.

    1. Find A Home On The Internet

    Realtor.com is one of the best places to look online. Enter the city and state, and you'll get almost every listing in the MLS system. Learn how to use the other tools as well. They allow you to narrow the search, for example, to just homes with 3 or more bedrooms, or just homes in a certain price range.

    2. Check The Newspaper Classifieds

    You have probably done this, but have you looked in more than one newspaper? More sellers may advertise in a cheaper weekly paper than in the most popular daily, depending on the area. Look at newspapers online as well. Classified ads may be archived for weeks, meaning you can search for homes still for sale that don't happen to have an ad in this weeks paper version.

    3. Tell People What You Want

    Let friends and others you meet know what you are looking for. Many homes have been bought because of a casual mention that resulted in someone saying, "Hey, I know of a house like that which will be for sale next week." When exploring a neighborhood you like, if you see a person working in their yard, stop and ask if they know of anyone thinking of selling. While you are at it, ask about the neighborhood.

    4. Find A Home By Driving Around

    The internet, newspapers, and MLS listings are good ways to find a home, but there will always be some houses that won't be found in these sources. Many great homes simply have a for-sale sign in the front yard. For these, you need to get out and look around. It's a good idea in any case. By driving around you can get an idea about which neighborhoods you might want to live in.

    5. Advertise Your Needs

    It isn't just sellers that can advertise. Buyers can too. In fact, this is how I bought my first home. My newspaper classified ad stated what I wanted, and the next day I received a call from an older couple who had been thinking of selling their home, but hadn't yet listed it for sale. A few weeks later I bought the home. Also try putting an ad on bulletin boards in the stores around the neighborhoods you like.

    6. Let A Real Estate Agent Find A Home For You

    Good agents will show you the MLS listings, but will also talk to other agents who may know of homes that will soon be for sale. Be very clear about what you want in a house. Let the agent know what is a necessity for you and where you can be flexible. You may want to write a list to help the agent to find a home that has what you need.
